Computer Hard Drive Explanation

By Andreas Lee

Computer hard drive is the lifeblood of any computer, from the tiniest laptop to the largest computer server. Without a hard drive to store data, even the most technologically advanced computer is worthless, so it is important to choose computer hard drive carefully. As you know, it is a busiest place in the computer system and has many moving parts that must operate very precisely to locate and store data efficiently. Along with its storage capacity enhancement, other aspect such as its transfer speed, interface type, and buffer cache are also increased.

This heart of computer rapidly records data as magnetic pulses on spinning metal platters. It is made up of a number of rapidly rotating platters that have a set of read/write heads on both sides of each platter. Each platter is divided into a series of concentric rings called tracks. Each track is further divided into sections called sectors, and each sector is sub-divided into bytes.

A motor spins the platters at speeds ranging from 4500 to 10 000 rotations per minute. The faster a hard drive spins, the faster you can access and transfer data. Many computer hard drive manufacturers are now making platters out of glass and ceramic because these materials can be made thinner than aluminum platters and are better to resist the heat generated during operation of computer hard drive.

Being the most important part of a computer makes the computer hard drive the biggest suspect when the entire system performance is slowing down. The solution of such situation is to defrag computer hard drive which has been proved to be the prime cure for a laggardly computer. Even if you asked a computer expert for the solution, most of them may probably go for disk defragmentation first before taking any further diagnoses.

Always take care on your computer hard drive is the best way to prevent your valuable data loss.

Computer Drive Defragmentation on Windows OS

By Andreas Lee

Your computer drive needs care to prevent any possibilities that may occur. You certainly do not want your hard drive crashed and data stored in your computer drive are lost, considering your data is worth even beyond the price of a hard drive itself.

If your hard drive is crashed, there is no 100% guarantee that your hard drive can be recovered and your data can be restored. Therefore from now on, give more attention to your computer hard drive. To prevent is better than to cure, isn’t it?

One of the preventive steps you can do without software installation is through defragmentation which has been provided by Windows Operating System. You may not realize the existence of this software that has been provided by Microsoft to fill the empty gaps with data which is -in other word- compressing data to improve computer drive performance.

Before defrag your computer drive, make sure that there are at least 15% unused disk space in computer hard drive to run effectively. Steps to defrag your hard drive:

1. Enter ‘My Computer’

2. Right click on hard drive which you want to defrag

3. Select properties

4. Select ‘Tools’ tab

5. Press ‘Defragment Now’ button

6. In Disk Defragmenter windows, press ‘defragment’ button

In Disk Defragment windows, you can also choose which computer drive you want to defrag.

Defragmentation process begins with the analysis to check fragmented files, contiguous file, unmovable files, and free space, followed by defragment to compress these four types of file.

Necessary to note that during the defragmentation process takes place, don’t use any program, download, back up data, or shut down your computer. Defrag you computer drive once per month is enough, the process may take about 30 minutes. But if you did not defrag your computer drive for a long time, the consequence is the process can take a very long time, about 10 hours or maybe a day.
